We encourage our school community to have a family emergency plan and to talk through emergency procedures for both at home and for emergency school pick ups. You can find resources on www.getready.govt.nz to help you be emergency ready.

In the event of an earthquake and/or tsunami happening during school hours, the following procedure will be followed:

-       All students and staff drop, cover and hold if they are inside. If outside, they drop and cover (turtle drop).

-       The principal (or person acting in their place) will check that it is safe to come out of the classrooms, at which time all classes congregate on the court, taking emergency bags with them.

-       Teachers take the roll and check areas of the school for any students.

-       Classes have been paired up and the school will evacuate down Ferry Street, up Tio Tio Road, to Star of the Sea.

-       The school will wait at Star of the Sea for parents to pick up their children. the Principal will stay at Star of the Sea until all students have been picked up.

-       Only people named on the emergency contact forms will be allowed to take students from there.

-       The school will use Hero and email if possible, to contact parents.

This procedure is practised once a term so students and teachers are very aware of what to do.

In the event of a fire, the following procedure will be followed:

-       At the sound of an alarm or evidence of a fire, teachers and students exit any buildings and congregate on the court beside the road.

-       Teachers bring emergency bags and take the roll.

-       When the buildings are declared safe, teachers and students can go inside. If the school needs to be evacuated, the students will be taken to the church to sit in family groups, waiting to be picked up.

-       Only people named on the emergency contact forms will be allowed to take students from the church.

-       The school will use Hero and email if possible, to contact parents.

In the event of a lockdown, the following procedure will be followed:

-       When aware of a threat, teachers will lock all doors and move the students out of sight as much as possible in the classroom.

-       Teachers will be in contact with each other through cell phones.

-       The school will use Hero and email if possible, to contact parents and keep them informed.

-       As part of our PB4L programme, teachers are taken through this procedure twice a year.
